As a school, we believe that developing strong reading skills is essential to a child’s overall academic success. Each classroom, as well as the school library, offers a wide range of narrative, non-fiction, and poetry books to engage students, and daily guided reading sessions help strengthen their comprehension and fluency.
However, reading development doesn’t stop at school - far from it. Research from the Department for Education shows that reading at home is one of the most impactful ways to support your child’s education. Short, consistent reading sessions can significantly boost your child’s vocabulary and critical thinking skills, while also sparking meaningful discussions about new ideas and topics.
At St. John’s, we value the partnership between home and school in helping every child reach their full potential. We believe that each child is unique, and our core values of respect, compassion, endurance, and justice are at the heart of our educational approach.
We encourage you to make reading a regular and enjoyable part of your routine at home. Just 10–15 minutes a day can make a lasting impact. Reading isn’t just about decoding words—it’s an opportunity to explore new worlds, discuss themes, and foster curiosity.
Together, we can inspire your child to not only excel academically but also develop a lifelong love of reading. Thank you to all the families that joined us this week to find out more about reading at our school. Let’s work together to make reading a key part of your child’s success, both now and in the future.
